Passenger Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Water Near Mogadishu
The Starsky Aviation flight had departed from Aden Abdulle International Airport en route to the northern city of Gaalkacyo when it encountered technical difficulties roughly 15 minutes into the journey. The pilot attempted to return to Mogadishu for an emergency landing, but the plane overshot the runway and ended up in the ocean close to the shore.
All 50 passengers and five crew members evacuated safely, with no injuries reported, according to officials.
Ambassador Mouktar Osman Karie, acting head of the African Union’s mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), and senior officials assisted rescue teams at the site to ensure the safe evacuation of everyone on board. Transport Minister Mohamed Farah Nuux was also present.
The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) confirmed that the aircraft sustained damage, but all occupants survived and were taken to a nearby hospital for medical checks. “All occupants survived the incident and were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and care. No fatalities have been reported,” the officials stated.
Authorities said an investigation would be launched to determine the cause of the incident. Video and photos from the scene showed the Fokker 50 aircraft with substantial wing damage but largely intact, resting on the shoreline near the airport.
“Thank God no one was injured in the accident, and the flight crew did their job best,” Starsky Aviation CEO Ahmed Nur commented on Facebook.
