Bridge work complete: Highway 18 reopens west of Malmo (Aug. 17, 2026)

Latest news releases

BAXTER, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation is excited to announce that Highway 18 west of Malmo, Aitkin County, will reopen to all travelers by Friday, Aug. 21.

This marks the completion of the six-week project that replaced a box bridge over Marmon Creek between 327th Place and 325th Avenue along the northeast shore of Mille Lacs Lake. Crews will also paved the road surface and updated guardrail.

The $1.3 million project provides motorists with a new, wider bridge to last 60-plus years, a smoother road surface and improved safety.

MnDOT thanks the community and traveling public for their continued patience as Highway 18 was detoured during construction.
