Two of the most visited UNESCO World Heritage landscapes in Latin America are now formally linked — and committed to a measured, verified climate pathway.

What we are bringing to Rio is not a promise but a method. It begins with measurement, because nothing can be reduced before it is known.”
— Luciana Visnevski, Director for Latin America, Green Initiative
RIO DE JANEIRO, RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL, August 21, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- This Friday, 21 August, at 9:00 AM, the Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer will sign the Climate Certification Agreement with Green Initiative, which provides for the survey of greenhouse gas emissions related to tourism activity, analysis of carbon capture in the surrounding forest areas, and the preparation of a climate diagnosis. Based on this data, a Climate Action Plan will be developed, with short- and medium-term targets and measures aimed at reducing emissions and decarbonizing the Sanctuary’s tourism operations.

The agreement will be signed by the Rector of the Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer, Padre Omar, and by the Director of Green Initiative for Latin America, Luciana Visnevski. The process will be carried out between 2026 and 2028, with annual certification cycles. Green Initiative will also be responsible for technical support and for the mobilization of resources for the implementation of the actions foreseen in the plan, at no cost to the Sanctuary. Depending on the results of each cycle, the Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer may receive Climate Positive or Carbon Neutral certification.
