CLARA CITY, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin improvements at the Highway 7 and Highway 23 intersection in Clara City on September 8. The project will install new LED stop signs with flashing beacons and make additional changes to enhance visibility and safety.
On Highway 23, MnDOT will remove the existing left-turn lanes to improve traffic flow at the all-way stop. The median stop sign will be repositioned closer to the through lane. New LED stop signs will provide brighter, energy-efficient lighting to help drivers see the signs more clearly, especially at night or during adverse weather conditions. Improvements on Highway 7 will include updated signage, rumble strips and new LED stop signs.
The improvements are the result of a safety study and recommendations from a partnership of MnDOT, the city of Clara City, Chippewa County, and the Highway 23 Coalition.
Landwehr Construction is the contractor for the $627,000 project.

Safety in work zones
Motorists should always be prepared to encounter traffic changes when approaching work zones including lane closures, lane shifts, uneven road surfaces, slow-moving heavy equipment and slow or stopped traffic. To keep everyone safe, drivers must:
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
- Drive undistracted. Avoid using cell phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating –while in work zones.
- Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
- Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
